For the African Woman of Superior Charm & Excellence...

Priscilla Sam Afua Kessie

Film Director, Writer

P Sam Kessie is an Atlanta-based British/Ghanaian, writer/director who has contributed to an impressive number of film shorts, documentaries and features in her career. Her cultural experiences in Western Europe, specifically London, England, have also influenced her greatly, just as her African heritage has inspired her to capture wonderfully unique stories on film. Sam’s parents were not fully aware of the boundless creativity and vision they had instilled in their daughter at an early age. Years later, she went on to pursue formal training in film and media, graduating with honors from Atlanta, Georgia’s American InterContinental University and even receiving the first place award at VidFest 2005.

Throughout her burgeoning career, Sam assumed a broad range of roles, including assistant director, script supervisor and casting assistant. Consequently, her enthusiasm and skill allowed her to assume major responsibilities ranging from story development to field production to post, ultimately exposing her to every aspect of the filmmaking process.

Sam’s directorial eye can be seen in Maverick Entertainment Group’s, Life 101: Angel’s Secret, which was released on DVD in June 2009. Other projects, such as Vivica A. Fox’s, 3 Can Play that Game and 2007’s, Dance of the Dead, show her ability to craft visual stories away from the camera, most notably through production and production design. The film shorts, Sales Day and Mourning Motives are two of her most personal projects to date and represent her capabilities from concept to completion. While Sam has grown as strong director and a skillful storyteller, she is also a gifted screenplay writer.

Sam intends to establish her creative footprint in the film industry through her independent production company, Sankofa Pictures, which focuses on exceptional storytelling and visual artistry. Her debut feature, Killing Harry, is currently being developed for production in 2010. With this film, Sam will have an opportunity flex her muscles as the writer/director. This film is also a fabulous vehicle for her to introduce a signature style, which combines sharp dialogue, grim humor and striking aesthetics with stories that explore tense and complicated relationships.

As a writer/director, Sam is a prime example of the young, diverse, yet fiercely talented filmmakers emerging from Ghana and living in the United States. “I want to be known as the kind of director who leaps over unspoken boundaries and carries the audience to unseen, maybe even dark places within themselves. Although my style of directing may be influenced, occasionally, by the fact that I am a woman and of British/Ghanaian descent, I don’t want that to define my voice as an artist. I don’t want to be boxed into one particular style or genre of films.”
